Extreme winter weather and heavy traffic congestion has forced the Ministry of Transportation to close a section of the Coquihalla Highway today.

The Coquihalla is closed from Merritt to Hope as crews work with heavy equipment to clear the excess snow and make the highway safe for travel, according to DriveBC.

A vehicle incident earlier in the day around six kilometres north of Merritt added to the traffic woes.

A travel advisory is in effect for the stretch of highway and DriveBC hopes to have an update later today on when the route will reopen.

Drivers are advised to detour via Highway 1 or Highway 3.

For the very latest on the closure go to DriveBC here.
