Cooler temperatures, showers not expected to last in Thompson Okanagan

Thompson Okanagan residents may be enjoying some precipitation and cooler temperatures but that will soon change later this week.

“It will not last much longer, unfortunately in terms of the fire situation,” said Environment Canada meteorologist Philippe-Alain Bergeron.

A few showers will taper off this afternoon, Aug. 8, with a slight risk of thunderstorms in the region later this evening, he said.

Northwesterly winds are expected to begin in the next few hours, which are expected to pick up through the afternoon reaching 20 km/hr, Bergeron said.

Starting tomorrow, conditions will be dry and hot. “Temperatures will be warming rapidly,” he said, with Kelowna reaching a high of 28 C.

Temperatures will reach 32 C midweek for Kelowna and 35-36 C for Kamloops, he said.

Plumes of smoke are drifting in a different direction this afternoon in Kelowna but the smoke will likely remain for those downwind from the wildfires, he said.

With wildfires burning in the region and with more stagnant winds, Kamloops and Vernon will likely see high smoke concentrations by Wednesday.

The particulates in the air are currently being washed out by the rain, but that’s temporary, he said.
