Controversial Russian band Pussy Riot returns to Kelowna

Russian feminist and protest performance art group Pussy Riot returns the stage at Revelry this year to perform Riot Days.

Following the world tour premier in Munich, Riot Days brings a new rendition of the show to take a deeper dive into activism as debates over ceasefire and the war’s future continues between Russia and Ukraine.

The performance last year took place mere days after the death of Alexei Navalny, Russian anti-corruption activist and lawyer. This year, despite difficulties, founding member of Pussy Riot, Maria Alekhina, is even taking the stage with other performers. Riot Days is based on Alekhina's second upcoming book exploring rebellion and resilience.

The show's spotlights include pivotal events, such as attacks by pro-Kremlin groups, violence and oppression of LGBTQ+ groups in Russia, Pussy Riot’s protests, including the clash of the Cossacks at the 2014 Sochi Olympics and raising rainbow flags on Russia’s most significant government buildings. Other moments include Navalny’s arrest, imprisonment and murder, Alekhina's repeated arrests in the face of oppression and the consequences of Putin's war in Ukraine.

Proceeds from the performance will go directly to support Ukraine aid efforts and Russian political prisoners, in hopes to reflect Pussy Riot’s dedication to fighting for justice and human rights.
