A controversial American evangelical singer, who is a member of the MAGA movement, has a performance scheduled in West Kelowna next month.

Christian nationalist musician Sean Feucht is scheduled to perform on Aug. 23 in West Kelowna's Memorial Park at the Annette Beaudreau Amphitheatre as part of a tour that has faced resistance from other Canadians across the country. Complaints have been filed with the City of West Kelowna as well.

Feucht's tour begins in the Maritimes, where Halifax residents have urged Parks Canada not to allow his performance at a national historic site. A performance in Charlottetown, PEI has also received pushback as Feucht's performance there is at a public park. Neither Parks Canada nor the City of Charlottetown have moved to stop the events.

The City of West Kelowna said it has received two complaints about Feucht's local performance as of Tuesday afternoon, July 22, but a spokesperson emphasized Feucht's performance is private and not affiliated with City programming.

"While we understand that some rentals may draw more attention than others, the City must follow fair and equitable procedures and we cannot prohibit or cancel a booking because the views of the artist do not align with those of the City of West Kelowna or members within our community," a written statement from the city read.

In 2020, the pro-Trump musician made a failed run for US congress as a Republican, and he has spoken out against queer community rights, abortion and critical race theory. Earlier this year, he praised president Donald Trump's tariffs against Canada and Mexico, saying God is using (Trump) to expose the evils in the two neighbouring countries.

The West Kelowna performance date isn't part of the City's Music in the Park event series, which is scheduled for the next day at the same venue, the Annette Beaudreau Amphitheatre in Memorial Park.
