City evacuates 25 homes at Penticton mobile home park due to potential rockslide

The City of Penticton has evacuated 24 homes in the Pleasant Valley Mobile Home Park on Penticton Avenue, Tuesday, Nov. 21, 2023, due to this large rock that has the potential to break away and fall.

The residents of 25 homes in a Penticton mobile home park were evacuated earlier today due to the threat of a rockslide.

The residents at Pleasant Valley Mobile Home Park on Penticton Avenue were asked to leave their homes today, Nov. 21, according to a City of Penticton media release.

“Earlier today, city staff were informed of a large rock that has the potential to break off, posing a potential threat to nearby residences,” Emergency Operations Centre director Kristen Dixon said in the release.

Firefighters and bylaw officers went door-to-door to notify the residents.

“Staff immediately had the site reviewed by a professional geotechnical engineer and following that, made the decision to evacuate the potentially impacted properties,” Dixon said. “The city is working to further assess the area, and develop plans to remove the rock fall risk.”

A local state of emergency has been declared and emergency support services is set up at Fire Hall 2 at 285 Dawson Avenue. The emergency operations centre is at level one.

“Residents are asked to go down to the centre and register as this will allow us to continue to update them on developments and what next steps may be necessary to deal with the hazard,” she said.
