TORONTO - Canada's biggest movie exhibitor plans to dish out more than just the latest films at its new upscale theatres.
Cineplex Inc. (TSX:CGX) says it has hired a corporate chef to create new food items that it will add to its existing line of appetizers that include calamari and macaroni and cheese.
The move is part of an aggressive expansion of its premium-priced "VIP" theatres that cater exclusively to adults by offering larger seats, menu service, and a licensed auditorium and lounge.
The company is also planning to build its first stand alone VIP cinema in Don Mills, Ont.
Other VIP screens will be added at two Toronto-area theatres and one new cinema in Kitchener, Ont.
Cineplex already operates VIP cinemas in Edmonton, Coquitlam, B.C., London and Oakville, Ont.
