The province is is about to begin work on a permanent bridge on Beaton Road in Cherry Creek after floodwaters washed it out in 2018.
The temporary bridge has been in place since flooding in the spring of 2018 washed out the original one in the community west of Kamloops, according to a Ministry of Transportation media release.
Due to the tight nature of the location, the temporary structure will be closed while the new bridge is under construction, and the closure will cut down on costs and construction time, the ministry says.
The east end of Beaton Road will be completely closed beginning Monday, March 2, and construction is expected to be finished by the end of April. A detour for local traffic will go through Gardi Road and Buckhorn Drive.
The ministry says a digital sign on Highway 1 has already been installed to warn motorists of the upcoming road work and standard signage will be in place once construction starts.
The new one-lane bridge will have rock armouring to protect from potential future damage caused by high-water events.
The new bridge is part of the Cherry Creek flood recovery work which saw new bridges installed on Rodeo Drive and Greenstone Road in 2019, which replaced culverts washed out in the spring 2017 flooding, the ministry says.
