CALGARY - Calgary Mayor Naheed Nenshi (nah-HEHD' NEHN'-shee) has been invited to take part in an international leaders program in the United Kingdom.

Nenshi is to travel to London next week where he is to join delegates from around the world to discuss social, security and prosperity issues.

The visit is also intended to showcase the relationship between the United Kingdom and the Alberta city.

The program is an initiative of U.K. Foreign Secretary William Hague and is run by the Foreign Commonwealth Office.

The mayor was nominated by the British consul general in Calgary.

Nenshi attracted attention for his calm and confident leadership during floods in southern Alberta last spring that swamped much of his city's downtown.

"Calgary is a dynamic and increasingly globally focused city and there is no more dynamic and global city than London. These two great cities have much in common and face similar opportunities and challenges," Consul General Tony Kay said in a release Tuesday.

"We look forward to discussing and learning from the important municipal issues that shape our day-to-day lives."
