The Kamloops Fire Department responded to a vehicle fire late last night in Valleyview, and the cause has yet to be determined.

"How it started will determine where this all goes," said RCMP Const. Bernie Ward. "Right now we're assisting the fire department."

The fire was reported on the 1900 block of Curlew Road at about midnight.

"Nobody was arrested, nobody was hurt," he said.

The cause of the fire has yet to be determined and could take months. Ward said there could be a number of reasons the car caught fire.

"Cars do burn on their own," he said. "If it's arson, it's usually because someone poured an accelerant onto it."

He said the process to determine the cause is quite involved. Experts from the fire department analyze the case and lab work may be additionally required. The fire department will make those determinations and pass information to the RCMP if necessary. Until the process is completed, the case is at a stand-still.

"We have to wait until we find out if it's actually a criminal event to be investigated," Ward said.
