Canadian Tire received permission today, July 18, to almost double the size of its Penticton store.

Adding in a new 10,893 garden centre, the business on Railway Street will more than double in size.

Penticton city council unanimously approved the development permit for the project.

The retail portion of the building will grow by 38,297 square feet with the warehouse adding another 17,869 square feet. The total expansion will be 56,166 square feet. The existing building is 65,261 square feet.

The parking lot will grow to 361 spaces from 284, there will be 130 bicycle parking stalls and the number of electric car charging stations will double to six.

The original Canadian Tire in Penticton was built in 1996 with an addition constructed in 2005.

Along with the new construction, the facade of the entire building will be upgraded and landscaped islands will be added in the parking lot.

In February, Canadian Tire announced plans to demolish the old Costco building in Kelowna and build a 209,000 square foot new Canadian Tire, more than doubling the existing retail space to 108,000 square feet.
