Canadian Tire to demolish old Costco building in Kelowna

The old Costco building near the Highway 97-Highway 33 intersection in Kelowna is slated for the wrecking ball.

Canadian Tire filed a development permit application with the city late last month but it did not contain many details about the project. The drawings made it appear that the existing building could be added on to but that’s not the case.

“The proposed store will be a new building that will replace the existing building on the property,” Canadian Tire said in an email to iNFOnews.ca today, Feb. 3. “It will have our latest in-store technology and more than double our selling space at the current location from just over 51,000 square feet today to 108,000 square feet.”

It will cost about $25 million to complete the new building and create 150 to 175 construction jobs, the email says.

“The proposed new store will bring our latest store concept - expanding our product categories and assortment and enhancing omnichannel experience,” the email says. “In addition, we will have our latest in-store customer pick up and our most modern Auto Service Centre.”

There was no timeline provided for construction or opening as the application still has to proceed through the city’s process.

The site was bought by Victor Projects for $31 million in August 2022.
