Hot dry weather has sparked a campfire ban to be reimposed in the Kamloops Fire District effective noon this Friday.
An earlier campfire ban during a hot stretch of weather was lifted in mid-June.
The current campfire ban, which takes effect at noon on Friday, July 7, includes the Thompson and Okanagan regions, as well as the Shuswap and west of Lillooet. Go here for a map of the region.
Unless conditions change, the ban will stay in place until Oct. 13, according to a BC Wildfire Services news release.
The use of fireworks, sky lanterns, burning barrels or cages, binary exploding targets, air curtain burners, tiki and similar torches and chimineas are also restricted.
The ban does not include outdoor stoves that burn charcoal briquettes, liquid fuel or gaseous fuel and have flames less than 15 cm tall.
There are severe penalties for ignoring the ban, starting with tickets for $1,150, administrative penalties of up to $10,000 or, if convicted in court, fines up to $100,000 and/or one year in jail. If the fire causes or contributes to a wildfire, the person responsible may be ordered to pay all firefighting and associated costs.
