The Latest: Assault suspect arrested after chase, carjacking

IRVINE, Calif. - The Latest on a driver arrested after a chase and carjacking (all times local):

10:15 p.m.

A man wanted for assault on a police officer has been arrested in Irvine after a wild car chase that ended with a carjacking and the driver tackled by a police dog.

Antonio Padilla Jr. was arrested Monday.

Police say he was suspected of almost hitting a Garden Grove policewoman with his truck during a traffic stop last week. He also was wanted for a parole violation.

Police spotted his pickup Monday. During a chase, the driver hit several cars then left the battered truck, pulled a woman from her SUV and stole it.

The woman's brother tried to drag the carjacker out but backed off when the lurching car nearly pinned him against the abandoned truck.

The car crashed and the driver tried to run but was taken down by the police dog.

Police have arrested a carjacking suspect in Irvine after a wild chase during which the man stole another car and was finally tackled by a police dog.

Police say the man was wanted for a Garden Grove carjacking last week and tried to ram police who spotted his pickup truck Monday in neighbouring Santa Ana.

In the ensuing chase, the truck careened along streets into Irvine, rear-ended a car, clipped several others and then finally rolled into an apartment building parking area where the driver pulled a woman out of an SUV.

A good Samaritan who tried to drag him out of the car backed off when it lurched forward and nearly pinned him against the truck.

The driver was arrested after crashing and being tackled by a police dog.
