PENTICTON – A would-be thief smashed a glass display at a jewelry store in Penticton’s mall, but a bystander grabbed the suspect before he could get away with the loot.

Police were called at about 2 p.m., Jan. 29, to Paris Jewellers in the Cherry Lane Shopping Centre to a report of a display case getting smashed by a thief, according to a media release.

RCMP say the bystander was seated near the jewellery store when he heard a loud bang and witnessed a man using a hammer to smash the glass in a display. He tackled the suspect and with help from others held him until police arrived.

A second suspect fled the mall, heading towards Main Street. Police have a description of the man based on witness accounts, and a warrant is being sought for his arrest.

A stolen 2007 F250 Ford pickup truck found idling at the mall entrance, which police say had been driven by the suspects, was also recovered.

Nothing was taken in the attempted robbery.

A 26-year-old Penticton man was held in custody over the weekend for a court appearance today, Feb. 1.
