British Columbians can ditch the decals on their licence plates starting tomorrow

This driver's insurance policy expires on July 18, 2022, according to the decals on their licence plate.

Starting tomorrow, British Columbians won’t need stickers on their license plates to show they’re insured.

ICBC has made a permanent change to allow customers to renew their policies online, according to a press release from the insurance monopoly.

The Crown corporation first began allowing customers to renew policies over the phone and by email as a response to the pandemic.

Since drivers won’t need to display the decals anymore, the Automated Licence Plate Recognition program is getting “as much as” $1 million to help detect unlawful, unlicensed and uninsured drivers, according to the release.

“The online insurance renewal initiative offers British Columbians a more convenient way to renew their ICBC auto insurance,” Mike Farnworth, Minister of Public Safety and Solicitor General said in the release.

“Working through the RCMP, police agencies in B.C. will be enhancing and expanding the Automated Licence Plate Recognition program that exists today.”

In preparation for the changes, motorists in B.C. have had the option to update their policy online since March 17.

“We know online insurance renewals are something our customers have been waiting for, and we’re pleased to announce that we’re on track to have this option go live next month,” ICBC's CEO Nicolas Jimenez said in the release.

“Online insurance renewals add to the growing number of digital options available to customers, providing greater convenience, choice and flexibility for British Columbians.”

Other jurisdictions such as Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Quebec and the Northwest Territories have already eliminated their decals.
