A 'hold and secure' order at Kamloops elementary school has been lifted after RCMP responded to a report of possible gunshots in the area.

Officers responded to Links Way and Nairn Place in the Aberdeen neighbourhood in Kamloops around 10:20 a.m. on April 12, after a report of gunshots.

Students and staff at nearby Pacific Way Elementary School were placed under a 'hold and secure' that was later lifted around 10:54 a.m., according to a school district spokesperson.

Witnesses said officers were in the area with guns drawn following the unconfirmed reports of shots fired. At least four police units were on the scene along with B.C. Ambulance paramedics.

After officers searched the area and found no one injured, the investigation concluded around 11:20 a.m., Kamloops RCMP spokesperson Const. Crystal Evelyn said.

The area is deemed safe for the public and the response was out of an "abundance of caution," though the source of the noise is not known, Const. Evelyn said.

It is also unclear whether the police presence is directed at the nearby school. The school district spokesperson said they are waiting on further information from RCMP.

Kamloops RCMP did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
