SUMMERLAND – Everyone who gets water from the Summerland water system is subject to a boil water notice effective immediately.
The District of Summerland says in a media release there were “unexpected issues” at the water treatment plant which caused the plant to shutdown, resulting in no water being supplied to the distribution system.
As a result, the supplemental line which supplies chlorinated untreated water, had to open to recharge the system, the district says, adding the introduction of untreated water into the system, even though chlorinated, triggers a boil water notice.
The district says the issues at the plant have been resolved, but the boil water notice will remain in effect until sufficient flushing and testing of the system can occur in order to ensure the untreated water has been removed from the system. The district doesn't say how long that will take.
Tap water must be brought to a rolling boil for at least one minute before it can be safely consumed, used for food preparation or even to brush teeth.
