The B.C. police watchdog is investigating after a person died in hospital after being taken there by police in Vernon.

According to the B.C. Independent Investigations Office at 7:25 a.m. April 25 police attended a residence and then transported a man to hospital.

"It is reported that the man was taken to hospital without incident but went into medical distress shortly after arriving," an Independent Investigations Office media release says. "The man was pronounced deceased shortly thereafter."

The police watchdog was notified of the death shortly after it occurred and is now investigating what role, if any, the police's actions had in the man's death.

The B.C. Independent Investigations Office is an independent civilian oversight agency that investigates all police-related incidents that result in serious harm or death, whether or not there is any allegation of wrongdoing.

The B.C. Independent Investigations Office is asking anyone with information to contact them at 1-855-446-8477 or via its website here.
