A B.C. teacher that had a sexual relationship with a student has been banned from teaching for life.
The unnamed teacher taught in B.C. from 1999 until 2016 when the B.C. Commissioner for Teacher Regulation discovered the teacher was having the inappropriate and criminal relationship with a student.
The teacher promptly resigned from teaching and was later charged.
The name of the teacher or whereabouts they taught in B.C. is not given in a June 7 B.C. Commissioner for Teacher Regulation decision.
According to the decision, the teacher pleaded guilty to a charge of sexual exploitation in 2019. The teacher was later sentenced but the decision does not give details of the sentence.
The criminal court proceedings were subject to a court-ordered publication ban.
The decision says the teacher agreed that they would never apply to, or teach in the province again.
The teacher admitted that he violated "his privileged position of power and trust in exploiting the student."
"The Teacher damaged the student’s physical and emotional safety and well-being," the decision says. "The Teacher was dishonest when he lied to the (Teacher Regulation) branch."
No other details are given in the decision.
