BC teacher suspended for 'bad cop' tactics

A BC teacher was reprimanded after he used self-described "bad cop" tactics when he was angry with a pair of students.

The teacher confronted the students more than once about their "concerning behaviour," but when they denied his accusations the first time, he said he would find out more information about what they did, according to a recently published decision from the BC Commissioner for Teacher Regulation.

It's not clear what he accused the students of doing, but tensions rose when he confronted them a second time.

The unnamed teacher was "visibly angry" and used what he called a "bad cop" tactic when addressing them, according to the regulator.

"This included using a raised voice, profanities and telling the students that if he were in high school he would 'kick your ass right now,'" the decision reads.

The students reported feeling threatened and unsafe afterward.

The regulator's decision didn't name the teacher, where he worked nor, as is standard, the students. Although the regulator published the consent agreement on Sept. 5, it redacted the date that it was signed.

Whatever the "concerning behaviour" was, the teacher claimed it was a repeated issue with at least one of the students. According to the regulator, it's something that should have been addressed by the school's vice-principal. The teacher, however, didn't report either of his confrontations with administrators.

He was given a discipline letter from the school district on June 30, 2022, and suspended for three days without pay at the beginning of the next school year. He also had to complete a course on "restorative action."

The teacher, who had been working in BC classrooms since 1999, later signed a consent agreement. The regulator found he failed to model appropriate behaviour of a teacher and didn't consider the "impact of his words or actions" on the students.

He won't face any further punishment from the regulator, however, after it found the district's punishment was sufficient. In signing the agreement, he won't make any statements questioning the regulator's findings or its decision.
