A BC teacher who failed to report that a student had threatened a classmate has been reprimanded by the regulator after they were fired by the school.
According to Dec. 17 BC Commissioner for Teacher Regulation decision, the teacher has been teaching for nearly 30 years when the incident happened during the 2020 to 2021 school year.
The decision said the teacher was teaching a class when a student threatened another student with an unnamed "sharp object."
The teacher separated the students, confiscated the sharp object and put it in their desk, and removed the threatening student from the classroom.
However, when the threatening student returned to class they managed to retrieve the sharp object from the teacher's desk.
An education assistant took the object from the student.
When class was finished the teacher let all the pupils leave and didn't report the matter to their superiors.
While they were all outside the threatening student approached the classmate and struck them with an object and verbally threatened them.
The decision didn't name the teacher, or say where they were teaching.
Following an investigation the teacher was fired in June 2021 and the regulator was informed.
"The Teacher failed to provide a safe and positive learning environment for their students. The students in question were of a young age and required greater vigilance and supervision," the Commissioner said in the decision.
"The Teacher was aware of a previous incident of conflict between the students and would reasonably have been aware of the risk of continued conflict and the importance of taking immediate steps to mitigate that risk by reporting the first incident to the administration and staff, which failure resulted in the second incident."
The regulator said the teacher didn't properly supervise the threatening student when they returned to the classroom.
The teacher signed a consent agreement admitting to their conduct.
No other details are provided in the decision.
