VERNON - The B.C. SPCA seized dozens of animals from a North Okanagan property today after concerns were raised about inadequate food, water and shelter.

Eileen Drever with the B.C. SPCA, confirmed the group executed a warrant and removed 46 horses, four dogs, and four hogs from a property north of Vernon on March 25. While she couldn't provide the exact location of the property, Global News confirmed it was the Irish Creek Road farm that was the site of a similar case of animal neglect over six years ago.

Drever said the animals were determined to be in distress due to a lack of proper water, food and shelter.

The property, owned by Carla Christman, came under harsh criticism when she pled guilty to underfeeding her animals in 2012. The property was back in the news recently when it was revealed the B.C. SPCA was looking into new claims of animal neglect.

In a press release, the SPCA said they met with the property owner earlier this month and issued several orders to improve the conditions of the distressed animals. After monitoring the situation, the SPCA was not satisfied the proper changes had been made to help the animals and they stepped in.

The house on the property burned down two weeks ago. The cause of the blaze is still undetermined.

Drever said the animals are currently under veterinarian care in undisclosed locations in the Okanagan. The SPCA is still looking into the case.
