VERNON - A home that attracted plenty of attention over the past few years for animal neglect burned to the ground early this morning.
All occupants of the house escaped the flames with no injuries and no animals were injured and they are all accounted for.
Vernon North Okanagan RCMP and the Okanagan Indian Band Volunteer Fire Department responded to a report of a structure fire at the 300 block of Irish Creek Road near Westside Road just after 12 a.m. on March 15, according to a RCMP press release. Crews found a house consumed by flames and they were unable to save it. Eye witnesses at the scene said the house was destroyed.
The property belongs to Carla Christman, who pled guilty to underfeeding dozens of horses and dogs on her ranch just over six years ago. Neighbours had also recently become concerned by the state of her animals again, but the SPCA told iNFOnews.ca earlier this year they were aware of the situation and were dealing with it.
SPCA and Major Crime Investigators remain on scene.
Police are investigating the cause of the fire. Anyone with information can call the RCMP at 250-222-8477.
