B.C. SPCA is looking after a pit bull and searching for its owner, after it was hit by a car in Kelowna Wednesday.

The dog was struck on Gordon Drive in the city and although the dog is recovering, the SPCA is looking for its owner.

"If you know who this sweet, 4- to 5-year-old pitty mix belongs to, please contact our centre as soon as possible," a social media post from the Kelowna shelter reads.

The animal welfare organization hopes to find the owner so it can "speed up treatment."

Facility manager Chaye Berry said the dog is currently at a veterinary hospital, where it was treated for more urgent injuries. Any treatment that "can wait" can't be done until after the four-day stray hold, she said.

"We're trying to locate the person who may be the owner," Berry said. Although she said they believe they know who that is, they haven't been successful so far.

The female pit bull mix was treated at the veterinary hospital and has some minor injuries that still need attention, according to the Jan. 17 post. Berry added the dog is being kept comfortable and free from pain while some treatment is held off during the four-day hold.

She couldn't provide details about the extent of the dog's injuries out of privacy concerns for its owner.

The Kelowna SPCA shelter can be reached at 250-861-7722.
