B.C. RCMP officer shot while executing arrest warrant

A Kalso area RCMP officer was shot this week.

An RCMP officer was shot this week while on duty in the Kootenays.

RCMP said a Kaslo RCMP officer suffered serious but non-life threatening injuries Thursday, Oct. 10 when an attempt to execute arrest warrants went awry.

The focus of the warrants, a 28-year-old man, fled and retreated inside a nearby cabin as RCMP approached, Cpl. Jesse O'Donaghey said in a press release. From there he allegedly fired off some shots.

The Mountie was the only injured party in the incident and following what O'Donaghey describes as “exhaustive negotiations between RCMP crisis negotiators and a 28-year-old man” the issue was resolved sometime on Oct. 11, when the man exited the residence. He was arrested without further incident.

“While we always hope that situations such as this come to a swift and safe resolution, we are thankful that our officer is expected to fully recover and no one else has been injured,” Supt. Brad Haugli, Officer-in-Charge of the Southeast District RCMP, said in a press release.

The injured officer was transported to a local area hospital and is expected to recover.

RCMP resources including the Emergency Response Team, Tactical Troop and General Investigation investigators have been deployed from across the province to support the ongoing investigation.

The man remains in police custody, no charges have been laid at this time.
