A B.C. nurse that failed to report incidents of elder abuse has been suspended for two months.

Licensed practical nurse Barbara Berg admitted to the allegations that she'd failed to report abuse that took place at the Maple Ridge Seniors Village between December 2020 and August 2021.

According to the B.C. College of Nurses and Midwives, Berg was told by a care aid they'd witnessed another care aid making a fist at a resident and putting them in a chokehold.

On another occasion, a report came to Berg when a care aid had placed an electric razor in a senior's mouth three times to "keep him quiet."

The nurse had not reported any of the abuse to her superiors.

According to the college, it attempted to contact Berg on 18 separate occasions via telephone and email over an eight-month period but she didn't reply.

Berg had been scheduled to contest the allegations at a hearing, but instead signed a consent order.

The nurse accepted a two-month suspension and agreed to complete education related to reporting abuse and protecting vulnerable adults, along with professional accountability and responsibility, and ethical practice courses.

She is also on the hook to pay an undisclosed amount of expenses to the college.

There are no details in the decision about what happened to the care aid that committed the abuse.
