A B.C. nurse is being called into a disciplinary hearing after allegedly launching online attacks against transgendered people over a period of three years.

The B.C. College of Nurses and Midwives has ordered Vancouver area nurse Amy Hamm to appear in person or by videoconference from May 30 to June 3.

“The purpose of the hearing is to inquire into your conduct as follows: Between approximately July 2018 and March 2021, you made discriminatory and derogatory statements regarding transgender people, some of which statements included medically inaccurate information, while identifying yourself as a nurse or nurse educator,” the citation states. “These statements were made across various online platforms, including but not limited to, podcasts, videos, published writings and social media.”

Hamm’s conduct is considered by the College as possible violations of various professional standards and may constitute unprofessional conduct.

If Hamm fails to attend the hearing, it will proceed without her and disciplinary action may follow.

In July, the Alberta-based Justice Centre for Constitutional Freedom said it was defending Hamm against the Nurse's College.

The Justice Centre has defended people throughout the pandemic who have been charged or investigated for anti-vaccine or anti-COVID messages, including a Lytton doctor who argued vaccines were dangerous and members of the truckers convoy that occupied Ottawa earlier this year.

A Newsweek article, also published in July 2021, said that the charges stem from actions Hamm took in support of a billboard saying "I [heart] JK Rowling" after the author of the Harry Potter books took to Twitter to defend a woman who had been fired for her anti-transgender views.

In the Justice Centre news release, which also cites the billboard incident, it says it is arguing that "professional misconduct must not be permitted to be redefined to include speaking unpopular truths."
