KELOWNA – Vandals smashed close to two dozen glass light fixtures at Waterfront Park overnight.
City of Kelowna Parks supervisor Ted Sophonow says 23 $1,000 light fixtures were vandalized to some degree. City crews have removed several of the fixtures, but the few remaining appear to have been smashed.
"We have no leads at this point," he says. "All we know is it was done sometime last night."
The fixtures were installed in the early 1990s, at a cost of $1,000 each.
"They're a speciality item, very unique, not off the shelf, basically constructed for Waterfront Park," Sophonow says. "Maybe even more (than $1,000), that was the old cost. Maybe we’ll find something cheaper."
The lights will be decommissioned today, Nov. 29, and Sophonow says it could be months before they are replaced.
"We’re going to get Crimestoppers involved and try and get some information from somebody."
