Harris, Kurelek works among paintings sold at Joyner Waddington spring auction

TORONTO - A sketch of the Canadian Rockies by Lawren Harris was one of the highlights during the Joyner Waddington’s spring auction Monday night.

The Harris work, ”Mt. Sampson, Maligne Lake, Mountain Sketch CVI,” sold for $212,400 at the Toronto event.

A painting depicting Ontario’s Georgian Bay, ”The Pine Tree” by Arthur Lismer, sold for $47,200 after fierce bidding.

Two paintings by William Kurelek did well, including a vision of Toronto’s lower Yonge Street entitled ‘‘He Gloats Over Our Scepticism‘‘ which sold for $153,400.

A smaller work by Kurelek entitled ‘‘Prairie Children Fetching Firewood,‘‘ fetched $106,200, more than five times its pre-sale estimate.

A large canvas by A.J. Casson entitled ”Madawaska Valley, October” found a buyer during the auction for $82,600.

A still life canvas by David Milne, ‘‘Bush Flowers,‘‘ exceeded its pre-sale estimate of $40,000-60,000, reaching a final price of $64,900.

A second still life by Milne, entitled ”Still Life With Violets,” sold for $25,960.

”Sans Titre,” an oil painting by Marcelle Ferron was the object of fierce bidding and soared past its estimate of $70,000-90,000 and sold for $118,000.

An online auction session of Canadian art is currently open, with bidding continuing until June 6 at 2 p.m. ET.
