A vehicle fire in Lake Country yesterday sparked a small wildfire that crews are still working to bring under control today.

B.C. Wildfire Service fire information officer Jajan Lidhran said the blaze was started yesterday, July 15, by an abandoned vehicle fire on Beaver Lake Road.  There were three B.C. Wildfire service members on site yesterday, along with a response officer, and a member of the Lake Country Fire Department.

Lidhran said the fire didn't spread to any adjacent fields in the area and was contained to the area of the vehicle.

An initial attack crew will also be on scene today to monitor the fire so it doesn’t spread, she said. The fire is not threatening any structures and is currently less than a hectare in size but is classified as out of control.

“The reason why we don’t change the classification code is until we know for sure. There are so many different variabilities in terms of weather and the dryness out there and if we see wind, that can impact the general way the fire moves, so at this point… we do have crews monitoring it,” she said.

The fire is one of two in the Kamloops Fire Centre that are currently being monitored by crews. Another in Kamloops is currently being held at 3.2 hectares in size.
