A 55-year-old man is dead after he was struck by a pickup truck while he was outside his stopped vehicle on Highway 6 in Coldstream last Friday.

Vernon North Okanagan RCMP closed the highway Friday afternoon, Sept. 24, while they investigated the scene, according to an RCMP news release.

The 55-year-old man was driving westbound on Highway 6 and pulled over to the shoulder. As he exited the truck, another pickup truck in the oncoming lane crossed the centre lane and hit the driver's side of the parked vehicle, RCMP said.

The man was then dragged for several metres.

"This is an absolutely tragic incident," Cpl. Tania Finn, Vernon North Okanagan RCMP spokesperson, said in the release. "Even more compounded by the fact that the deceased man’s 12-year old son was in the parked vehicle when his father was struck and killed. Our hearts go out to everyone involved in this tragedy."

RCMP, B.C. Ambulance Service and Coldstream Fire Department responded to the scene on Sept. 24, around 3:45 p.m.

Paramedics took the 12-year-old passengers to hospital out of precaution.

The 88-year-old driver of the pickup truck stayed at the scene and police said he cooperated with investigators.

RCMP are continuing their investigation but do not believe drugs or alcohol were a factor in the collision.
