In just one day, an online fundraiser for a Lake Country woman who suffered a life changing injury will skiing raised more than $50,000.

On Jan. 9, while skiing at SilverStar Mountain Resort near Vernon, Brita Colero collided with a chair lift tower and she is now a paraplegic, family friend Tracey Dickie said.

“Doctors have told Brita and Sandy (Colero) that their life is about to get very expensive. Barring a miracle, Brita will not regain use of her legs and while she can expect to have independence, she requires the use of specialized equipment and support services," Dickie wrote on the GoFundMe web page.

The family hopes rehabilitation will be able to restore her right arm to full capacity.

The fundraiser aims to provide money for the family to make short-term modifications to their home and to help them transition into a fully accessible home. The funds will also be used to adapt family vehicles so Brita will be able to drive.

“I am humbly open to this help; however, I want each person to know that their prayers and their ability to love well are equally important to me as any financial contribution. To anyone who is not able to participate in this, or feels any obligation or guilt, please consider praying and loving well as your contribution to bringing me home,” Brita wrote.

“It is a story of generosity,” Dickie said, who was surprised to see how much money was raised in one day.

Since the GoFundMe began Jan. 28, it has raised more than $50,000 of its $100,000 goal.
