45-year-old Albertan dies after shootout with police at home

A 45-year-old Alberta man was found dead after being shot at by police.

The Cold Lake RCMP responded to a firearms complaint at a property on the Cold Lake First Nation yesterday, Feb. 4 at 7:48 a.m., according to an RCMP news release.

Officers contained the residence and attempted to make contact with the suspect. There was a confrontation between officers and the suspect and at least one officer discharged a firearm. Police entered the home and found the suspect dead. Firearms were also found inside.

No officers were injured.

The investigation has been taken over by the Alberta Serious Incident Response Team.

“The Alberta RCMP believes in processes that seek the facts and it's important that processes taken to assess the actions of all those involved, including the police, are fair, transparent, and defendable,” the release says. “This is why, as soon as we became aware of this incident, we immediately notified the Director of Law Enforcement and initiated our internal review process.”
