An evacuation alert has expanded to include 150 properties northwest of Kamloops Tuesday night as the Sparks Lake wildfire grew to 23 square kilometres before 10:30 p.m.

The wildfire remains out of control, with 47 firefighters attacking the blaze on Tuesday and assistance from six helicopters and six pieces of heavy equipment, according to B.C. Wildfire Service.

Twenty firefighters remained at the scene overnight. Helicopter bucketing was hampered by the hot weather because they kept overheating, the wildfire service said.

The evacuation alert was issued at 11 p.m., June 29, to Electoral Area "J" in the Thompson Nicola Regional District, which includes 150 properties in the Deadman, Red Lake, Tranquille Valley and Vidette Lake areas.

The alert in Thompson Nicola Regional District Electoral Area "J" follows an evacuation order issued to ten properties near Red Lake on Tuesday afternoon.

As smoke remains visible to Kamloops and surrounding communities, it's beginning to spread into the city, but the air quality index rating remains at a 3. However, the province has alerted community members to expect changes in the coming days.
