Future Kamloops fire, search and rescue hall eyed at $10M

Search and rescue crews in Kamloops could share space with firefighters and the potential new hall is estimated to cost nearly $10 million.

Funded mostly by the Thompson-Nicola Regional District, it would put the 50-person volunteer group in a much larger hall, funded by communities across the region.

The local volunteer group has been looking for a homebase for nearly a decade. As Kamloops Fire Rescue eyes an eventual replacement of its Rayleigh neighbourhood station, search and rescue crews could finally get the move they've been looking for.

Kamloops Search and Rescue is expected to contribute $1.4 million of its share of the $9.5 million cost through fundraising, while the remaining $2.4 million would come from the City specifically to fund the fire department's share. The TNRD funds the rest.

Three-quarters of the new 15,000 square-foot hall at 4420 Devick Road would be reserved for Kamloops Search and Rescue, while the rest would be for the fire department.

Kamloops Search and Rescue did plan to move from its Mission Flats area facility to North Kamloops when the new Cooper Centre was built. It was to share space with a search dog training facility. It's not clear why, but they backed out of the deal and have continued the search for a new home since.

The City-owned Rayleigh area property was identified last year and planning has continued since.

The regional district board will consider on July 17 whether to move ahead on plans to partner with the City and with the search and rescue group. Funding for the new fire hall, however, hasn't yet been approved by city council.

If approved, it's not clear when the new construction would start.
