1,478 COVID-19 cases in B.C. since Friday, 92 in Interior Health

B.C. health officials are reporting 1,478 new cases of COVID-19 since Friday, 92 of which were in the Interior Health region, for a total of 80,672 cases since the start of the pandemic.

Currently, there are 4,464 active cases of COVID-19 and 236 people are hospitalized with the disease, 65 of whom are in intensive care. There were also another eight deaths since Friday, provincial health officer Dr. Bonnie Henry and Health Minister Adrian Dix said in a press release today, March 1.

There have been 42 new confirmed COVID-19 cases that are variants of concern, for a total of 158 cases. Of the total cases, 10 cases are active and the remaining people have recovered. This includes 137 cases of the B.1.1.7 (U.K.) variant and 21 cases of the B.1.351 (South Africa) variant.

Additionally, 275,681 doses of COVID-19 vaccine have been administered, while 83,777 of which are second doses.

This morning health officials laid out how the province is moving into the next phase of its vaccination program, offering hope that the decision to elongate the period between the first shot and the booster to four weeks will ensure that most British Columbians get immunized before the end of spring.

Currently, the immunization plan is in Phase 2, which will see more than 400,000 higher-risk people in B.C. immunized between March and early April.

Of all the new cases, 327 were in the Vancouver Coastal Health region, 857 new cases in the Fraser Health region, 88 in the Island Health region, and 114 were. in the Northern Health region.
