EARTH - A Lake Country man has been to Mars — the simulated version anyway.
Ross Lockwood, a PhD candidate in condensed matter physics at the University of Alberta, hails from Winfield but has spent the last four months in a NASA built simulation centre on the slopes of the Mauna Loa volcano in Hawaii.
Lockwood was one of six people chosen to participate in the study. During the mission, they lived in a solar-powered dome, subsisted on dehydrated food and only ventured outside in their survival suits.
On Friday, Lockwood and the crew returned to Earth. You can watch their last hour in the dome, and their first breath of fresh air in 120 days, in the video below.
