White Christmas expected for Okanagan

OKANAGAN - With freezing temperatures, and some snowfall predicted before the big day, it should be a white Christmas across the Okanagan.

On Christmas Eve there is a 40 per cent chance of flurries across the Okanagan which should ensure a white Christmas despite a forecast that calls for a mix of sun and cloud with a high of -7 Celsius on Dec. 25.

Until then, the mercury isn't likely to get any where near the freezing mark.

Today, Dec. 21, plan for periods of light snow, up to two centimetres worth, and a high of -4 C in Kelowna and Vernon, according to Environment Canada. The snow will end near midnight but not before another two centimetres of snow. The mercury will fall to -7 C overnight.

In the South Okanagan today, the forecast calls for clouds, periods of light snow beginning in the early afternoon, the wind south at 20 km/h and a high of -3 C. Expect periods of snow overnight in Penticton with the temperature steady near -4 C.

The forecast calls for a mix of sun and cloud across the Okanagan tomorrow — although Penticton will see more cloud than sun — with a high around -3 C. It will be cloud overnight with the low down to -10 C.

Forecasters expect a sunny day on Saturday with a high of -5 C, and clear skies overnight with a low of -13 C.

There is a 40 per cent chance of flurries for Christmas Eve on Sunday with a daytime high of -9 C. The chance of flurries continue overnight with a low of -10 C.

The forecast calls for a mix of sun and cloud on Christmas Day on Monday with a high of -7 C. Expect cloudy periods overnight with a low of -11 C.

Normal temperatures for this time of year are highs of -2 C and lows of -8 C.
