Vernon high school locked down after report of gun

A Vernon high school had to initiate a hold and secure after an individual was spotted with a gun in the school's parking lot.

On Feb. 15, around 12:40 p.m., officers were called to Vernon Secondary School after receiving reports that an individual in the school's parking lot was seen in possession of a firearm, according to a Vernon RCMP news release.

School staff members were informed that the individual had left in a vehicle, administrators then initiated a hold and secure and called the police.

Officers responding to the report quickly identified the suspect and were able to arrest the individual at another location with no incident.

The firearm was a BB gun.

"From our investigation, there has not been any indication there was any direct threat to the safety of the school," Vernon RCMP spokesperson Const. Chris Terleski said in the release.

The 18-year-old individual was released from custody and will appear in court at a later date.

"In response to any potential dangers, the Vernon North Okanagan RCMP and School District 22 will take any and all necessary action to ensure the safety of our students and schools," Terleski said. "We are working closely in partnership with SD22 as we continue our investigation and want to thank everyone for their patience and cooperation as we worked to safely resolve the situation."

The police investigation into the incident will continue, but no further information is available at this time.
