Eric Foner wins $50,000 American History Book Prize

NEW YORK, N.Y. - The latest honour for Pulitzer Prize-winning historian Eric Foner is a $50,000 award from the New-York Historical Society.

Foner's "Gateway to Freedom: The Hidden History of the Underground Railroad" has received The American History Book Prize, the society announced Friday. Previous winners of the award include Ron Chernow, Robert Caro, Doris Kearns Goodwin and Gordon Wood.

Foner, 73, won the Pulitzer in 2011 for "The Fiery Trial: Abraham Lincoln and American Slavery,' and has won the Bancroft Prize for "The Fiery Trial" and his landmark work on the post-Civil War era, "Reconstruction."
