KAMLOOPS - After two days of almost constant snow, School District 73 will close schools for a second day on Tuesday, Jan. 6 though Thompson Rivers University is set to reopen.
At 6:30 a.m. Monday the school district made the decision to keep schools closed because of the heavy snow and by later in the afternoon Supt. Karl de Bruijn announced a second day of closures. He noted city crews are only managing to keep up on main roads right now and secondary roads, many of which are used by parents and staff, will not be cleared until later this week.
More snow and freezing rain is also forecast for tonight as a winter storm warning continues. Up to 10 centimetres of snow is expected by Tuesday morning and temperatures will warm up to about -2 Celsius overnight. Environment Canada is still recommending all non-essential travel be postponed.
The city is running crews 24 hours per day trying to keep up with the snow. Public Works Director Jen Fretz says they are currently focussing on major roadways and arterial roads with secondary streets expected to be cleared later this week. Snow clearing in the North Shore and Downtown business areas will start to take place Tuesday night.
Thompson Rivers University made the decision on whether to reopen early Tuesday morning.
