KAMLOOPS - Former Coun. Nancy Bepple stepped down from her council seat in March due to health reasons but Wednesday morning she announced her intention to run in the upcoming election.
Bepple said her health is now under control and it will not impact her ability to be serve the city.
"It was a chronic health issue," she noted. "I have it under control and I know how to deal with it."
She did not want to go into any further detail other than to confirm it was a newer issue and after taking some time off she is now feeling healthy and strong.
Bepple was first elected in 2008 and was known to advocate for a range of services and issues, including transit, seniors and mental health, but gained notoriety when she proposed a pay raise for council last year.
The Thompson Rivers University faculty member also served as a regional district director for three years and sat on several national Federation of Canadian Municipalities committees.
“Working at the national level, I know the City of Kamloops is doing a lot of things right. But things can always be improved,” she said in a release Tuesday. “Working with national groups, the city also benefits by learning best practices from other cities so it can be even better.”
All of the current councillors — Donovan Cavers, Ken Christian, Nelly Dever, Tina Lange, Arjun Singh, Marg Spina and Pat Wallace — along with Bob Deino, Dieter Dudy, Annette Glover, Peter Kerek, Dustin McIntyre, Andrew Miller and Mike O’Reilly have announced their intentions to run for councillor.
Nomination papers have to be filed between Sept. 30 and Oct. 10 with the civic election set for Nov. 15. In Kamloops we will vote for one mayor, eight councillors and five school trustees.
