VERNON - An Armstrong man who was reported missing after heading out to hike in an area northeast of Cherryvile earlier this week has been located.

The man reportedly went camping near Spectrum Lake in Monashee Provincial Park earlier this week but had not been heard from by his family, which was raising alarm, Vernon Search and Rescue manager Pete Wise said earlier today, May 18.

Lumby RCMP identified the missing man as Brett Hartwig, 45, of Armstrong. Police said he left on the hiking trip Monday, May 16, and had only checked in with family once.

“An initial aerial search by RCMP Air Services did not locate Hartwig or his campsite,” Cpl. Trevor Tribes said in a release.

His vehicle was located at the Spectrum Lake trailhead and crews headed to the area to continue the search for the man.

RCMP said the man was located by search and rescue volunteers around 6 p.m. today and is safe and sound.

According to Wise, the man had a spot beacon with him but it was not transmitting.
