KAMLOOPS - Plans are in the works to show the televised Tragically Hip concert in Kingston at the end of their tour next month on outdoor screens in Kamloops.

Jennifer Harbaruk with the Canadian Cancer Society in Kamloops says two locations have been picked to show the band's Aug. 20 concert, with one focused on families and the other a more adult-oriented venue with a beer garden.

“We’re just waiting to finalize details,” she says. “We assume there will be a couple of thousand people at each venue.”

The show is the last of the band’s Man Machine Poem tour, but they are shying away from calling it their final show ever. Lead singer and songwriter Gord Downie was recently diagnosed with terminal brain cancer.

The Aug. 20 concert will be broadcast and streamed by the CBC. In an effort to raise funds for brain cancer research, the Canadian Cancer Society is hosting outdoor shows and collecting donations at the sites.

“All monies will be directed to brain cancer research as directed by the Tragically Hip,” Harbaruk says.

Locally, Harburuk has been working with the city and the North Shore Business Improvement Association to organize the viewings.

The live stream will start around 5:30 p.m. local time on Aug. 20. It’s being broadcast from Kingston, Ont., the band’s hometown.

The organization is looking for volunteers for the events. Those interested can call Harbaruk at 250-374-9188.

As well, local musicians are holding a charity concert full of Tragically Hip songs on Sept. 22.
