VERNON - With more green than white on the ground, at least one local golf course is enjoying an earlier than normal start to the season.
The Spallumcheen Golf and Country Club on Highway 97 plans to open its 18-hole course this weekend, and the nine-hole sometime next week. The driving range is already open.
“When the snow goes, we open,” employee Jan Dion says.
This year’s opening date is earlier than usual (last year’s was March 12) although the course has opened in February before, Dion says.
So far, the Spallumcheen club is the only Vernon course where you can get an early jump on your golf swing. Typically the first local course to open, Dion can’t put her finger on exactly why that is, except to say, "I think we’re just a little keener."
