SICAMOUS - A sudden early morning fire in Sicamous has shut down a landfill for the day.
The Columbia Shuswap Regional District stated a fire started in the wood chip pile of the Sicamous Landfill due to spontaneous combustion in the early hours of June 1. The fire quickly spread to the wood waste pile.
Fire crews from the District of Sicamous were called to 950 Two Mile Road at around 5:30 a.m. to battle the landfill blaze. They managed to keep the fire contained within the landfill and they are currently using heavy equipment to extinguish the rest of the flames and prevent any flare-ups.
Due to the fire, the landfill will be closed for the day. The District will update residents when it reopens.
