LONDON - Jose Mourinho will be expected to testify at an employment tribunal about his public clash with Chelsea's club doctor after she rejected more than $1.5 million to settle the case.

The case at the Croydon Employment Tribunal in south London opened Monday just as Mourinho is starting in his new career as manager of Manchester United. He was fired by Chelsea for a second time last year.

Mourinho has not appeared before the media since being hired by United two weeks ago. But the Portuguese coach now faces at least a day being cross-examined by the legal team for Eva Carneiro, who is claiming constructive dismissal by Chelsea.

Carneiro was dropped from first-team duties after Mourinho accused the medical staff of being "naive" for treating Eden Hazard on the field with Chelsea already down to 10 men in last season's Premier League opener in August.

Carneiro claims in legal documents that as she ran onto the field, Mourinho shouted an insult and subjected her to sexual discrimination.

Chelsea said Carneiro "adopted a provocative approach and refused to engage in steps to rebuild her relationship with Mr. Mourinho."

"She indicated a willingness to remain at Chelsea only if her wholly unrealistic and extravagant financial (and other) demands were met," Chelsea's legal team added in a document presented to the tribunal which disclosed a 1.2 million pound ($1.7 million) settlement was offered.

Carneiro has a separate, but connected, personal legal action against Mourinho, who was fired by Chelsea in December.
