With Christmas over, the next big day on everyone's minds is New Year's Eve. Expectations for the special night can be high, and Vernon has no shortage of celebratory events to meet the demand.

You may choose to spend the night at the King of Hearts New Years Eve Bash at the Schubert Centre. For $50 per person, you get cocktails (6:00p.m.), a four-course dinner (7:30p.m.), and room to dance (9:00p.m.). Tickets are available at the Vernon Schubert Centre, www.KingOFHeartsMusic.com or by phoning 250-545-7777.

If you're craving the dance floor, head to the Vernon Recreation Centre for the Komasket Style New Year's Eve Dance Party. Bands include Samsara, Wassabi Duo and DJ Timothy Wisdom. The all-ages event begins at 8:00p.m. and will include vendors, a cash bar, a silent auction and ethnic cuisine. Tickets are available online at Ticket Seller.

You can dance out 2012 at Tick Tock and Rock, a fundraiser for the North Okanagan Hospice Society. Live music including the Sonny Boys will take place at the Best Western Vernon Lodge. The event begins at 8:00 p.m. Tickets are $30 and are available at the Best Western or at www.thesonnyboys.com

The Legion on 29th Street is also hosting a dance party at 8:00p.m. with live music by Sierra. Phone the Legion at (250)545-3295 or (250) 543-2696 for more information.

For those willing to spend a little more cash, Predator Ridge Resort is hosting a New Year's Eve Masquerade beginning at 7:00 p.m.. Tickets are $125 and include a welcome cocktail, a six-course dinner with wine pairing, party favours, and a sparkling wine toast at midnight. Live music will feature the Gordon James Band. Call 250-542-3436 for tickets.

If music and dancing isn't your thing, you might want to head up the mountain to Silver Star. The resort is putting on fireworks and a torchlight parade which will snake down the slopes into the village. For $5, you can participate in the parade on your skis or snowboard. This event may appeal to trigger-happy camera lovers wanting to capture colourful lights reflecting off the snow. The parade begins at 8:00 p.m. and fireworks will start after the final skier/boarder torchlight has been extinguished.

For the more adventurous types, Silver Star is also hosting a New Year's Eve snowshoe trek out to the Wild Horseman's Cabin at 7:00 p.m.. Old-fashioned games, a bonfire, chocolate fondue and a sleigh ride back to the village are all included in the fun. Contact the Village Ski Shop at: 250-558-4292 for details.

Whatever your destination Dec.31, be sure to drive carefully and arrange a safe ride home if need be. Driving hands, a designated driver service, will pick you and your car up anywhere in Vernon for $20, and from Silver Star for $50.
