KAMLOOPS - Smoker's will be allowed to light up in Kamloops parks for special events, thanks to a request from Ribfest organizers.
Cigarette smokers will be allowed in the beer gardens of special events after city councillors agreed to have designated smoking areas for events permitted to sell liquor, even though they had some concerns around the health impact of smoking.
Mayor Peter Milobar noted allowing a smoking area would ease security issues associated with liquor sales, because people wouldn’t be constantly moving between a smoking area outside of the park and a beer garden. While he supported the request, Coun. Denis Walsh said it may encourage smokers to drink.
The June 14 vote was in response to a letter from the Daybreak Rotary Club asking to be allowed to have a smoking area inside their beer garden during the three day event at Riverside Park, Aug. 5 to 7.
City council recently approved a new bylaw banning smoking in public parks.
