KELOWNA – The Interior Health Authority isn’t going into specifics, but the overdose prevention site won’t be going into the planned location in Rutland.

Two overdose prevention sites were supposed to open today, Dec. 16, in Kelowna, but now there will only be one in downtown Kelowna for the foreseeable future.

The planned site at the Living Positive Resource Centre on Asher Road will not be opening today as initially planned, according to a brief media release issued this afternoon by Interior Health.

“As we worked through the process it became apparent that we would not be able to offer the service at this location,” the release states. Interior Health is looking at other locations in Rutland.

Living Positive executive director Clare MacDonald and her staff had been working overtime this week to get the service in Rutland up and running following the B.C. government announcement on Monday, Dec. 13.

The overdose prevention sites are safe places where people with addictions can take drugs with a nurse or paramedic nearby.

The site at the former Kelowna Health Centre at 1340 Ellis Street did open today from noon to 5 p.m., Interior Health says. Its regular hours will be Tuesday to Saturday from noon until 7:30 p.m.
